Why worship a Shivling with a jalhari?
The jalhari, also called the yoni or peetham, is the base on which the Shivling rests. Together they represent Shiva and Shakti, and the spout carries away the water, milk and panchamrit offered during abhishek.
Brass jalharis are durable and develop a warm patina with use. They can be cleaned with tamarind or lemon in the traditional way. White marble stays cool, is easy to wipe clean and suits both modern and traditional mandirs.
Place the Shivling so the jalhari's spout points north, and keep a small bowl under it to collect the abhishek water, which can be poured into a plant.
Questions
Shivling with Jalhari: FAQs
Which direction should the jalhari spout face?
Traditionally the spout of the jalhari faces north. The devotee sits facing east or north while offering abhishek.
Brass or marble jalhari: which is better?
Both are traditional. Brass is sturdy and easy to polish; marble is cool, elegant and very easy to keep clean. Choose the one that suits your altar.
