How to Identify an Original Narmadeshwar Shivling

Quick answer
An original Narmadeshwar Shivling is genuine Narmada river stone: it feels heavy and cool, its markings are mineral veins inside the stone, and no colour comes off on a damp white cloth. Hand-polishing is normal; resin, cement, dyed or painted pieces are fakes.
- Heavy and cool to the touch
- Markings run into the stone; they are not painted on
- Damp white cloth test: no colour comes off
- No sticky, plastic or peeling coating
- Every genuine piece looks different
An original Narmadeshwar Shivling is one made from genuine stone of the Narmada river. Traditionally these stones are shaped and polished by hand, so a smooth, shining finish is normal. What you need to watch for are imitations: resin or cement casts, other stones, and dyed or painted markings. These checks will help.
1. It feels heavy and cool
Narmada stone is dense. A genuine Shivling feels noticeably heavy for its size and stays cool to the touch for a while. Resin, plastic, cement-based or hollow pieces feel light and warm up quickly in the hand.
2. Markings are inside the stone
Natural markings are mineral veins that run into the stone and blend softly at their edges, and you can see them continue around the curve. Painted or printed markings sit on the surface, have sharp edges and may look identical on several pieces.
3. The damp-cloth colour test
Wipe the Shivling firmly with a damp white cloth. Genuine stone leaves no colour behind. If brown, red or black comes off, the stone has been dyed or painted.
4. No sticky or plastic coating
Hand-polishing gives Narmada stone a natural shine. A thick, sticky or plastic-feeling layer, bubbles in the surface, or a coating that peels at the base are signs of resin or varnish hiding a lesser stone.
5. Every piece is different
Because each stone comes from the river, colour and markings vary from piece to piece. A batch of Shivlings that look exactly alike, down to the markings, usually means casts or printed patterns.
6. The seller shows you the exact piece
A trustworthy seller can share photos or a video of the exact Shivling you will receive and tell you where it comes from. At SHIVYA, our Shivlings are hand-finished by our own artisans in Bakawan on the Narmada, and we share photos of your actual piece on WhatsApp before dispatch for sizes of 3 inches and above, and on request for any order.
